Hello there!👋
This is the Spira Farms newsletter. Where we talk foods you probably would never research on your own. When’s the last time you Google’d Radish?
Today we are going to talk about:
- Radishes are more radishing than you may think.
Radishes are more Radishing than you may think 🤵
First thing I tell people about radishes are that they are spicy 🔥🔥🔥
They are spicier than the adult plant, and that is often the takeaway of radishes. You either like spicy and go for it, or prefer mild and move over to kale. Given that I am writing about how radishing radishes are, there are actually really great things to consider it as a regular eating option. 👇
Like all microgreens, radishes are of course far more nutritious than the adult. The range of nutritional greatness is typically up to 40x more than the adult. which means eating 1 oz of radishes can be like eating 3-6 pounds of radish.
Alright, so you get a lot more ‘stuff’ from radish microgreens, but what is in there?
You’ve got your classics – Vitamins A, E, C, B(‘s) K. 💊
Your minerals – Calcium, Iron, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Potassium, and Zinc 🪨
You also a get a bunch of your polysaturated and antioxidants from radishes which I think are some of the most exciting things that come from the plant when comparing to others.
Alright lets put on our student caps on and learn about anti-oxidants first. 📖
Radish microgreens have historical been used to treat many stomach conditions such as inflammations and ulcers. There is actual validity that radishes help with these! Radishes have something called beneficial secondary metabolites called glucosinolates, polyphenols and isothiocyanates that have been proven to help us in a number of different ways.
Glucosinolates help inhibit cancers such as colon, prostate, breast.
Isn’t Fat Bad? 🤔
Most fats are actually great for us, polysaturated fats that the radishing radishes have are incredible for us. Ever heard of Omega-3 and Omega-6? These are essential fats we as humans cannot produce from food and need from outside sources.
Many Americans turn to fish oil to get their Omega fix. However, you can actually get these from many foods, including radishes.
There are a lot of great reasons to eat radishes. It’s not a common food normally when it is the root, you aren’t going to throw radishes into every meal you make. However, in microgreen form the world of radishes really opens up. Now it’s on our pizza, burgers, sandwiches. Some brave enough even add it to their smoothies but that is not my personal preference. Microgreens really make it a lot easier to consume the foods we need, and make radishes far more radishing than ever before.
